This blog post has been a long time coming! I have been spray tanning myself (a.k.a throwing on mousse) at home since about junior year in high school. I can remember my girlfriends coming over the day before a dance so I could help them do it properly. I’ve always loved that sun kissed glow. While I do enjoy laying out and having a natural tan, I know how bad it is for our skin, so I try to do self tanning instead… as much as possible and wear sunscreen when I’m in the sun!

Before & After

Before (left) No Tanning Mousse

After (right) Ultra Dark Mousse

- No filters or edits!!

- PRODUCT: Ultra Dark Tanning Foam (discount code above)

DIRECTIONS:

STEP 1:

  • Exfoliate entire body

  • Shave

  • TIP: Shower the night before, or hours before

    • When our skin gets wet, our pores open. If you tan right after… when your pours start to seal, your tanner gets stuck inside and it can cause tanning marks/streaks/etc. I always shower the night before, or hours before I tan myself.

STEP 2:

  • Dry yourself off, but don’t apply lotion. Many lotions/oils block the color from absorbing into your skin.

STEP 3:

  • Start tanning yourself!

  • Take your mitt in one hand and apply 2-4 pumps of mousse for each limb

  • Start in long motions

  • Work your way into circular motions

  • Repeat until your entire body is covered smoothly

  • TIP: Be nearby a full length mirror so you can check your entire body to make sure you’re fully covered in tanner

  • ARMS

    • TIP: NEVER tan your palm of your hand

    • TIP: Make a claw with your hand, and use the excess on your mitt to run lightly rub between your fingers when you’ve finished your arm.

    • I usually rinse my hands with warm water (no soap) after about an hour of the tan processing. I do this so that my hands aren’t super dark. You always want your hands and feet a little lighter than your body.

STEP 4:

  • Once your whole body has been tanned… stand naked to dry for a couple of minutes. This helps make sure you’re not too sticky!

  • I always throw on a sweatshirt, sweatpants, & fuzzy socks. I do this so that no skin is exposed and I can sit on my bed or on the couch and relax!

STEP 5:

  • Rinse off in the shower (after you’ve waited the proper time according to the instructions on the bottle). For the “Ultra Dark MineTanBody” I did the 3+ hours directions for the darkest coloring. Some days I leave it on for 1-3 hours if I’m in a rush, but for the darkest tan I usually sleep in it, or leave it on for 6-7 hours!

  • TIP: If you sleep in it, always wash your sheets after just incase!! Your partner may hate you while you’re a little sticky and smell, but you’ll be lookin’ fly when you’re all tanned!!!

  • TIP: I try to keep my post tan shower quick and not use TOO much body wash or sit under the water too long. The less you shower/ use body wash the longer your tan will last! If you’re like me, you shower 2x a day with workouts and such, so I usually reapply my tanner every 3-4 days as needed.

STEP 6:

  • Rinse off with a white towel (that way you can just bleach it)

  • Apply any lotion after you get out of the shower to your entire body

  • ALL DONE

FAQ:

Q: How long does it last?
A: This answer is going to be different for everyone. I have a good base tan (naturally) and because I’m outside often for workouts and by the pool or lake! My tan usually lasts me a while, but I never really let it fade. I usually reapply every 3-4 days or depending on sweaty workouts, events, shooting content/ campaigns. This is not necessary though, I’m just constantly on camera! I’d say it definitely lasts a week or more… getting lighter and fading the more you shower and/or shave!

Q: How do you get the tanner off before you reapply?
A: I use the exfoliating product & mitt linked above if my tan at all streaks from running & sweating (which never happens to me really). If my tanner still looks good, and I just want an extra glow… I just reapply another layer over it.

Q: Does it ever show up orange?
A: I think the only way a tanning mousse is going to show up orange is if you get a color that is way too dark for your natural skin. If you are very very fair skinned, maybe go for the medium tanning color, rather than the Ultra Dark! MineTanBodySkin’s website and selections is unreal! You can basically match any skin tone! It’s the biggest selection I’ve ever seen!

Q: Will it come off on my workout clothes?
A: I’ve been running everyday with this tanner, fully dripping sweat, and haven’t noticed any tanning product coming off on my clothes at all! However, if I ever wear a white sports bra, shorts, top… After I wear them I immediately wash them with a tiny bit of bleach just Incase!

Q: Can you shave or does it take off your tan?
A: I shave my arms and legs about 1x a week, it will take off layers of your tan, but not all of it. I suggest shaving 1x a week if you can to help your tan last longer!

Q: What other brands have you tired?
A:

St Tropez, loved (used for years), but way more expensive (double the price) than MineTanBody, without being any better! So now I’ve switched YAY!

Isle of Paradise, I hated the tanning drops & the spray. I had streaks, discoloration, orange hands, etc!

Body Blur, I love (my go to) their body makeup/last minute tan!
